Dr Eoghan McCarthy

Clinical Lead, Consultant Rheumatologist

Dr McCarthy is a graduate of University College Cork. He is trained in General Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. During training he undertook a PhD in Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) investigating the role of monocyte dysfunction in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) as well as a Master in Medical Education in NUI Galway. Subsequently he undertook a fellowship in connective tissue disease and vasculitis in the Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology, Manchester Foundation Trust where he was appointed as a consultant rheumatologist with a specialist interest in Connective Tissue Disease in 2015. He returned to Ireland in 2021 to his post as a consultant rheumatologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Beaumont Hospital/RCSI. Currently he runs the lupus and connective tissue disease clinic in Beaumont with his colleague Prof. Laura Durcan. His research interests include SYNERG-IE, investigating immune-stromal cell interactions in Rheumatoid and Psoriatic Arthritis with colleagues in DCU as well as toxicity associated with immune check point inhibitors in cancer.
